Falcons Give Titans First WIAC Loss

UW-Oshkosh fell from the list of unbeaten teams in the WIAC women's soccer standings with a 2-1 loss to UW-River Falls on Saturday (Oct. 17) in River Falls.

Maggie Koehler scored both goals for the Falcons (6-7-2, 1-3-1 WIAC), who dealt UW-Oshkosh (9-3-1, 3-1 WIAC) its first setback in nine matches, including four league contests.

Following losses by both UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater (13-3, 4-1 WIAC) on Saturday, UW-La Crosse (12-3, 5-0 WIAC) is now the WIAC's lone unbeaten team.

UW-Oshkosh, which entered Saturday's match ranked 25th in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, took a 1-0 lead over UW-River Falls on Robyn Elliott's goal during the 28th minute (27:03) of play. Elliott scored her eighth goal of the season off a pass from Christina Mauthe.

The Titans two more chances to extend their lead in the first half, but UW-River Falls goalkeeper Erica Cimochowski saved consecutive shots by Kaitlyn Schauer and Felicia Retrum in the 39th minute. Cimochowski also stopped a shot by the Titans' Alex Kleis in the 19th minute.

UW-River Falls had two early opportunities to score, but shots by Jenna Marier in the 10th minute and Megan Hanunger in the 16th were blocked by UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Nina Muzi.

The Falcons came out firing in the second half as they attempted four quick shots, including one by Abby Soderholm that was saved by Muzi in the 50th minute. UW-River Falls' fifth shot of the period finally entered the net as Koehler followed a pass from Soderholm with a score during the 51st minute of play.

In the 10 minutes following the game-tying goal, UW-Oshkosh's Rylee Engelland had two shots and Mauthe one saved by Cimochowski.

UW-River Falls got the winning goal from Koehler during the game's 66th minute (65:19). Passes from both Caroline Meier and Naomi Egger created Koehler's third goal of the season.

Kendra Jepson nearly tied the score for UW-Oshkosh in the 68th minute, but her shot hit the post.

UW-River Falls had a 19-18 lead in shots, while UW-Oshkosh had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Soderholm had six shots and Marier five for the Falcons, while Engelland and Mauthe both had four shots for the Titans.

Muzi finished the match with three saves and Cimochowski six.

UW-Oshkosh plays its next four matches at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium, beginning with Tuesday's (Oct. 20) contest against the University of Dubuque (Iowa).
