Titans Conquer Warriors In Home Opener

Box Score

Taylor Grimm homered and drove in a season-high six runs as the nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh baseball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with an 11-2 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran College during the Titans' home opener Wednesday (March 28) at Tiedemann Field.

UW-Oshkosh (11-2), ranked 25th in the NCAA Division III by D3baseball.com, has not lost since a 14-10 setback to Transylvania University (Ky.) on Feb. 25. The Titans, who entered the national top 25 for the first time since 2013, own their longest winning streak since rattling off 12 straight victories in 2008.

The Titans, who outhit the Warriors 11-6, scored four runs in the fourth inning and three runs during both the third and eighth frames. UW-Oshkosh has won each of its 11 meetings with Wisconsin Lutheran College since the series began in 2003.

Grimm launched a three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning that gave the Titans the lead for good at 3-1. Grimm, who hit his team-leading fifth home run of the year, added a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and a two-run single that capped the scoring during the eighth frame.

Jack Paulson added a career-high four runs batted in for the Titans. He laced a three-run double in the home half of the fourth inning before driving in a run with a groundout during the eighth.

UW-Oshkosh's Logan Reckert went 3-for-4 while Noah Polcyn and Sam Schwenn scored two runs apiece.

Titans starting pitcher Colan Treml improved his record to 5-0 on the year by limiting the Warriors to two runs (one earned) on two hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out four.

UW-Oshkosh relief pitchers Nick McLees and Alex Larson combined for four scoreless innings. McLees allowed three hits in three innings pitched before Larson gave up one hit and struck out three in the ninth frame.

Wisconsin Lutheran College (2-11) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a two-out, run-scoring double from Brannigan Hart.

In the decisive bottom of the third inning, Paulson drew a one-out walk and Schwenn followed with a bunt single ahead of Grimm's go-ahead homer to left field.

After Treml retired the Warriors in order during the top of the fourth inning, the Titans put the game away with four consecutive hits in the bottom of the frame, including Paulson's bases-clearing double down the left-field line that increased the UW-Oshkosh advantage to 6-1. Paulson later came around to score the Titans' fourth run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Grimm.

Wisconsin Lutheran College cut its deficit to 7-2 on a two-out fielding error in the fifth inning, but UW-Oshkosh tacked on an insurance run in the seventh frame on a single from Alex Koch and three more runs in the eighth, including two on Grimm's two-out single down the right-field line.

Grimm now leads the conference in runs (19), home runs, runs batted in (27) and total bases (42) while Paulson is leading the league in stolen bases with eight and tied with Grimm atop the WIAC with 19 runs.

Jake Wiedower had two hits, including a double, to pace the Warriors.

Wisconsin Lutheran College starting pitcher Ben Veenstra (0-2) was charged with the loss, yielding seven runs on eight hits in four innings.

UW-Oshkosh remains at home to face Milwaukee School of Engineering for a doubleheader Friday (March 30) at Tiedemann Field.
