Titans, Lady Reds Play To Overtime Tie

The UW-Oshkosh and Carthage College women's soccer teams battled through 90 minutes of regulation play and 20 minutes of overtime for a 1-1 tie Saturday (Sept. 21) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Both squads scored their goals within four minutes of each other during the final 11 minutes of regulation.

Carthage College (3-2-1) broke a scoreless debate on Morgan Verbeten's goal during the game's 80th minute (79:02) of activity. Verbeten tallied her goal after rebounding a long free kick from Kenzie Zocher.

UW-Oshkosh (3-3-1) evened the score a few minutes later as Addie Schmitz sailed a 10-yard kick into the net after receiving a cross from Mallory Knight. The goal by Schmitz in the contest's 83rd minute (82:51) was her second of the season.

The host Titans launched 16 shots and earned seven corner kick opportunities. UW-Oshkosh recorded all six of their overtime shots in the second session, including Mackenzie Bennett's header that was saved by Carthage College goalkeeper Sara Lieffrig in the 106th minute.

A total of 11 players attempted shots for UW-Oshkosh, including Bennett, Knight, Schmitz, Emily Burg, Grace Herrmann, Delaney Karl and Maddie Morris who discharged two apiece.

Carthage College, which leads the all-time series against UW-Oshkosh by a 4-1-2 tally, counted 15 shots and six corner kicks. The Lady Reds were held to just one shot during each of the two overtime periods.

Verbeten, who leads Carthage College with five goals on the season, paced the Lady Reds with eight shots against the Titans. Carthage College also received two shots apiece from Zocher and Courtney Lee.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Madelyn Runyan registered eight saves, including four in the second period. She stopped a pair of Carthage College shots in overtime, kicks by Verbeten in the 95th minute and Kelsey Dejno in the 101st.

Lieffrig finished the contest with five goalkeeping saves, including two in the second overtime episode.

UW-Oshkosh's overtime match on Saturday was its first of the season.

UW-Oshkosh will host Illinois Wesleyan University Sunday (Sept. 22) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
