The UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team won a pair of matches to open the 2022 season Friday (Sept. 2) at the Christopher Newport University Captains Classic in Newport News, Va.
UW-Oshkosh (2-0) defeated Lewis & Clark College (Ore.), 3-1, in set scores of 18-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-18 before sweeping Hollins University (Va.) in scores of 25-11, 25-17, 25-23. Statistics for the Lewis & Clark match are not yet available.
During UW-Oshkosh's victory over first-time opponent Hollins, all 21 Titans received playing time. UW-Oshkosh held Hollins (0-2) to -.009 hitting and recorded eight service aces.
UW-Oshkosh went on runs of nine straight points for a 17-9 lead in Set 1, six consecutive points for a 19-13 cushion in Set 2 and three points in a row, including a pair on Olivia Breunig (Sauk Prairie/Sauk Prairie) service aces, to reclaim the lead for good at 21-18 during Set 3.
Thirteen different Titans notched kills, including Claire Bresser (Waupun/Waupun) with a team-leading six terminations on 11 swings, Kate Nottoli (Palatine, Ill./Saint Viator) with five kills on 10 attacks and Riley Kindt (Brookfield/Brookfield East) with four terminations on six errorless swings. Bresser, Kindt and Carissa Sundholm (Muskego/Wisconsin Lutheran) chipped in two blocks each.
Breunig and Amelia Hust (Verona/Verona Area) both accounted for two service aces for the Titans while Sophie Illman (Muskego/Muskego) and Izzy Coon (Fond du Lac/St. Mary's Springs Academy) had team-bests of 12 digs and nine assists, respectively.
UW-Oshkosh closes out its trip to Virginia with a pair of matches Saturday (Sept. 3), taking on host Christopher Newport (1-1) and Juniata College (Pa.). Juniata (1-0), which reached the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Championship a year ago, is ranked fourth by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
