Titans Lead Wire-To-Wire In Win Over Vikings

Alex Rondorf scored a team-high 16 points as the Titans defeated Augustana, 77-52, in Wisconsin Dells

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis.- Twelve Titans tallied points in UW-Oshkosh women's basketball's 77-52 victory over Augustana College (Ill.) in the UW-Oshkosh Titan Classic at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells on Friday (Dec. 20).

The Titans (8-0) shot 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the field, 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from three, pacing the Vikings (4-7, 1-2 CCIW) in both categories. UW-Oshkosh added 66.7 percent (16-of-24) from the line while leading 33 to 30 in rebounds, 18 to seven in points off turnovers, 32 to 26 in points in the paint, and 19 to 10 in second chance points.

Alex Rondorf (Gr. • West Bend) went 6-of-7 from the field, including 4-of-5 from three for a team-high 16 points with eight rebounds (one offensive).

With her third double-double of the season, Kayce Vaile (Fifth • Greendale) recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds (five offensive), adding two steals. She shot 5-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.

Avery Poole (Jr. • Cottage Grove) registered six assists while Sammi Beyer (Fr. • Oshkosh) joined Vaile with a pair of steals.

Vaile scored the first points of the contest 20 seconds after winning the tip-off and followed the layup with another just over a minute later. She added a pair of free throws for the first six Titan points of the game, then Rondorf put UW-Oshkosh up, 9-2, with her first 3-pointer at 5:36 in the opening period. The Vikings cut the deficit to three points on a layup and a jumper, however Poole sunk two free throws at the 3-minute mark to push the edge further in Oshkosh's favor. The Titans recorded a steal and two blocks over the remainder of the quarter and neither team scored.

Augustana outscored Oshkosh 7-2 in the first 2:14 of the second quarter and tied the score at 13-13, however it could not take its first lead as the Titans accumulated a trio of field goals by 5:19 to lead by six points. The Vikings climbed back within three points after the halfway mark of the quarter which the Titans responded to with nine consecutive points, leading 33-21 late. Lexi Hayes scored on a fastbreak layup with eight seconds in the half, making the score 33-23.

The Titans scored the first seven points of the third quarter as Rondorf hit a three and Vaile made two layups. Rondorf followed a Viking layup with yet another made 3-pointer, increasing UW-Oshkosh's edge to 18 points and Vaile tallied a good free throw, putting the Titans up 44-25 with 6:36 to go. Short runs for the Titans were cut off by Augustana, however their lead slowly grew to 24 points by the end of the third quarter and Sammi Beyer (So. • Appleton) punctuated the scoring bonanza on a last-second jumper for UW-Oshkosh's 60th point.

Three made shots from the charity stripe nearly brought the Vikings within 20 points of the Titans early in quarter four but Oshkosh had another idea. Mallory Hoitink (So. • Hartford) hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Rondorf made her fourth three to extend the lead to 30 points, the largest deficit of the contest. Augustana got back within 21 points with nine straight by 2:18, then got outscored, 8-4, as Hope Barington (So. • Sobieski), Mayah Holzhueter (Jr. • Cambridge), and Mahra Wieman (Jr. • Sparta) all came off the bench to score in the final few minutes of play.

The Titans will face the University of Northwestern (Minn.) (4-4) in the fourth game of the Titan Classic on Saturday (Dec. 21) at 2 p.m.
