Titans Sweep Pioneers, Win 21st Straight Set

OSHKOSH, Wis.- UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball extended its winning streak to seven straight matches and 21 consecutive sets when it swept Carroll University at Kolf Sports Center on Wednesday night (Oct. 8) by scores of 25-15, 25-22, 25-15.
 
UW-Oshkosh (20-2, 3-0 WIAC), the third-ranked team in Division III by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, hit .268 in the match to Carroll's (10-9, 1-3 CCIW) .030. Oshkosh also racked up 44 kills and four service aces to the Pioneers' 26 kills and one ace.
 
Lauren Grier (Fond du Lac/Fond du Lac) led the way for the Titans as she recorded 10 kills on a hitting percentage of .412, adding two solo blocks. Samtha Perlberg led Oshkosh in digs with 15 along with eight kills and two service aces. Grace Jurgens, Clare McEniry (North Aurora, Ill./Rosary), and Maren Motz (Hartland/Arrowhead Union) all recorded seven kills while Riley Borrowman (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) contributed five kills of her own. Jaclyn Dutkiewicz (Franklin/Franklin) notched 21 assists followed by Izzy Coon's (Fond du Lac/St. Mary's Springs Academy) 19.
 
UW-Oshkosh jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the first set thanks to two kills from Grier and one each from Perlberg, Borrowman, and McEniry. Carroll responded by scoring the next three of four points putting the score at 7-5. Oshkosh then scored the following four points including a kill from Motz and McEniry, stretching the Titans' lead to 11-5. Oshkosh later shut the door in the set by scoring six of the last seven points from two kills each from Borrowman and Juergens with McEniry adding one of her own. Juergens put the Titans up by a set with one of the kills.
 
Set two started the same with UW-Oshkosh leading 6-2 early. The second set's early spurt included two kills by Perlberg and one from Grier. The Pioneers stole a point before the Titans scored four straight, including two aces from Perlberg, keeping Oshkosh in front, 10-3. Carroll stormed back and took the lead by scoring nine straight points for a 12-10 lead before the teams went back and forth with Carroll keeping the lead at 18-16. Oshkosh reclaimed the lead by tallying three straight points and later scored six of the last eight points, including four kills from Grier and two from McEniry, giving Oshkosh the set two win.
 
UWO started hot with a 7-1 lead to open the third set. Neither team scored more than twice in a row, including 11 traded serves, until the Titans went 3-0 to create a 15-8 lead. The teams again went back and forth with Carroll cutting the deficit to as few as five points before the Titans took the set, 25-15, after scoring seven of the last nine points thanks to two Motz kills and one each for Perlberg and McEniry.
 
The Titans find themselves back on the court on Wednesday, October 15 as they travel to face WIAC foe in the UW-La Crosse (15-8, 0-3 WIAC). They look to add to their four-match winning streak over the Eagles. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. in La Crosse in the Mitchell Hall Gymnasium.
