Pioneers Hold Off Titans In Platteville

PLATTEVILLE, Wis.- UW-Oshkosh football hung in with UW-Platteville through all four quarters on the road on Saturday (Nov. 1), never allowing the Pioneers to lead by more than two touchdowns in its final road game of the regular season.

The Titans (4-4, 2-3 WIAC), ranked 25th in Division III by D3football.com and receiving votes from the American Football Coaches Association this week, led the No. 13/15 Pioneers 220-170 in passing yards, completing 20 of their 33 attempts for 6.7 yards per attempt and two touchdowns. Platteville held the edge in rushing yards (223-54), total offensive yards (393-274), and first downs (23-11).

Oshkosh converted five of its 14 third down chances and succeeded in scoring on its only red zone trip.

Sharing the passing responsibilities at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium, Quentin Keene (Waunakee/Waunakee) completed 12 of 19 attempts for 142 yards, a touchdown, and an interception while AJ Korth (Menasha/Menasha) went 8-for-14 with 78 yards and a touchdown. Korth also rushed for a team high 31 yards on eight attempts on the ground.

The Titans' top receiver was Hunter Gibson (Chicago, Ill./Glenbard South). He caught one pass for a 69-yard touchdown, followed by Doug Burson (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) with 42 total offensive yards and Jackson Brush (Franktown, Colo./Legend), who caught three passes for 28 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Kyle Dietzen (Omro/Omro), the WIAC leader in total and solo tackles, reached double-digit tackles for the fifth time this season. He recorded 10 tackles (seven solo) and was followed by Ben Wellhoefer (Omro/Omro) with six (three solo).

The Titans received the opening kick and stalled out at the Pioneers' 49-yard line before John Abernathy (Valdese, N.C./Draughn) punted for the first of eight times in the contest. By the end of the day, he totaled 334 yards with two punts that traveled more than 50 yards and one that landed within the opposing 20.

Following a missed field goal attempt for Platteville at the 28, Oshkosh punted in back-to-back possessions around another failed Pioneer drive that resulted in a turnover on downs.

The Pioneers scored the first points of the game with 9:26 left in the second quarter, capping off a 59-yard drive with a 1-yard rush to the end zone.

After Tommy Teberg (Burlington/Burlington) returned the kickoff to the Titans' 24-yard line, it took three plays for Oshkosh to tie the game up at 7-7. Ben Vallafskey (Appleton/Appleton West) opened the drive with a 3-yard rush and Brush registered a 4-yard reception to move the line of scrimmage to the 31. Hunter Gibson (Chicago, Ill./Glenbard South) dashed down the field to catch a 69-yard pass from Keene, scoring with 7:51 left in the half.

Platteville reclaimed the lead in the following drive with an 8-play possession. After three punts, the Pioneers ran just one play before the half ended.

The teams again traded punts to open the second half and the score remained at 14-7 after the Pioneers failed to convert a field goal for the second time.

Keene was intercepted on the third play of Oshkosh's final possession of the third quarter, and the Pioneers increased their lead to 21-7 early in the fourth quarter at the end of a 57-yard drive.

UW-Oshkosh started its final scoring drive at their own 11-yard line with 10:41 remaining on the clock. A 26-yard rush by Ammiel Jackson (Milwaukee, Wis./Riverside University HS) and a 25-yard catch by Doug Burson (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) flipped the line of scrimmage from Oshkosh's 20 to Platteville's 29. Korth totaled 25 rushing yards in back-to-back plays, bringing the ball to the 4-yard line, and two plays later, Keyvon Holloway (Adams/Adams-Friendship) caught his first touchdown of the season to bring the deficit within a score.

The Titans will host a pair of WIAC opponents in the next two weeks to close out the regular season. They play UW-Stevens Point (record) on Saturday, November 8 as UW-Oshkosh celebrates the 2015 WIAC Championship team and welcome No. 8/8 UW-Whitewater (record) to J.
