Titans Drop Nationally Ranked Battle To Knights

Nate Nazos led the Titans with nine rebounds and three assists on Saturday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- UW-Oshkosh men's basketball fell to Calvin University (Mich.), 89-52, at the Knights' Van Noord Arena on Saturday (Dec. 6) in a contest between two nationally ranked programs.
 
The Titans (6-2), ranked 17th in the most recent D3hoops.com poll shot 26.9 percent (18-of-67) from the field, 17.1 percent (6-of-35) from three, and 62.5 (10-of-16) from the line in the contest while the No. 11 Knights (5-1) went 54.7 percent (29-of-53) from the field, 48 percent (12-of-25) from three, and 59.4 percent (19-of-32) from the line.
 
Oshkosh scored 20 of its points in the paint, six off turnovers, four on fast breaks, and 22 off the bench while pulling down 38 rebounds, 10 assists, three blocks, and four steals.
 
Since the 1985-86 season, Oshkosh is now 7-3 against Calvin and 2-3 in the last three games.
 
The Titans jumped out to an early lead by scoring the first six points of the game with an and-one layup by Brandon Beck (Rockton, Ill./Hillcrest Prep (Ariz.)) and a Logan Rindfleisch (Milwaukee/Wisconsin Lutheran) three. Calvin responded with four points in a row and Joey LaChapell (Appleton/Appleton East) and Aiden Hawkinson (Waupun/Waupun) pushed the edge to four points twice before the Knights went on a 29-0 run over 10 minutes of play to make the score 36-11. Beck decreased the deficit to 17 points at 37-20 with 2:33 left in the half, however the Knights closed out the opening period with a 9-0 spurt, sending the teams to their locker rooms with the score at 46-20.
 
Calvin broke a string of exchanged baskets 3:34 into the second half and tacked on five more points before Jonah Rindfleisch (Milwaukee/Wisconsin Lutheran) made a free throw at 14:10. After the Knights scored five consecutive points, Oshkosh went on a seven-point run that featured a Michael Metcalf-Grassman (Shawano/Waukesha/Shawano Community) free throw, a LaChapell free throw, a Hawkinson three, and a Jay Dalton (Fond du Lac/Fond du Lac) layup, cutting the lead to 69-38. The Titans used another 6-0 run to make the score 73-46 with 6:28 on the clock but were outscored 16-6 down the stretch.
 
LaChapell and Logan Rindfleisch (Milwaukee/Wisconsin Lutheran) led the Titans with nine points apiece and Nate Nazos (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) recorded team highs of nine rebounds and three assists.
 
The Titans will return to Oshkosh and host Ripon College (2-7, 2-0 MWC) at Kolf Sports Center on Wednesday, December 17 at 7 p.m. Oshkosh is 4-3 against the Red Hawks since 1985-86 and 2-0 in the last two matchups.
