Titans Run Rule Garnet Chargers, Defeat Pioneers In Florida

Sophie Wery hit her second home run of the season against Lewis & Clark on Tuesday

CLERMONT, Fla.- UW-Oshkosh softball defeated Union College (N.Y.) and Lewis & Clark College (Ore.) on Tuesday (March 25) by scores of 10-0 and 8-5 respectively at THE Spring Games in Clermont, Florida.
 
The Titans (14-2) tallied 25 hits on the day with 11 against the Garnet Chargers (2-5) and 14 against the Pioneers (16-2). All seven of Oshkosh's extra-base hits came against Lewis & Clark.
 
Mary Kate Quaid (Fr. • Aurora, Ill.) and Amanda Martineck (Fr. • Frankfort, Ill.) led the Titans in game one as they each went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run.
 
Grace Nardi (Fr. • Marquette, Mich.) started for the Titans in game one. Nardi (4-0) tossed four innings and racked up a season high 11 strikeouts while allowing just one hit. Calmes (Jr. • Kaukauna) came in for the final inning of and struck out one of the four batters she faced.
 
The Titans opened their scoring barrage in the second inning against Garnet Chargers when Morgan Miller (Jr. • Schaumburg, Ill.) singled to drive in a run. Martineck then singled to drive in another. Olivia Baugnet (Fr. • De Pere), Cali Divito (Sr. • Inverness, Ill.), and Morgan Rau (Fifth • Downers Grove, Ill.) all recorded RBI singles to make the score 5-0 after two innings.
 
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Oshkosh again scored five runs. Miller singled,  Sarah Hammerton (So. • Appleton) then walked in a run and Quaid singled to drive in two more.  Martineck then sent in the final run to give Oshkosh the 10-0 win.
 
Against Lewis and Clark, Rau was perfect at the dish as she went 4-for-4, drove in two runs, and scored twice.  Sophie Wery (Sr. • Seymour) also had a solid game two as she was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and scored once.
 
Sydney Nemetz (Sr. • Marinette) started on the bump against the Pioneers. She threw four innings and struck out three batters while allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk.  Brianna Bougie (SO - Oshkosh) pitched in relief for Nemetz. She finished the last three innings, struck out two and earned the win which put her at 4-0 this season.
 
Rau started the scoring for Oshkosh in the top of the first inning as she tripled and drove in Abby Garceau (Sr. • Mishicot). Rau then scored on an Olivia Ullman (Fr. • Denmark) single in the following at-bat.
 
The Titans added two more runs in the third when Hammerton and Wery each singled to drive in one run a piece.
 
Lewis & Clark then responded in the third, fourth, and fifth innings with four runs of its own to tie the game going into the sixth.
 
Divito and Rau each doubled in the top of the sixth inning to drive in a run each. The Pioneers then added another run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead back to a run.
 
With two outs, Haylie Wittman (Jr. • Kaukauna) doubled down the left field line to put her in scoring position. Her place around the bases turned out not to matter when Wery lifted her second home run of the year over the left field fence, putting Oshkosh up 8-5 with half an inning to play.
 
Bougie forced a pair of groundouts to open the final frame before putting a runner on first. Her fourth batter of the inning flew out to right field and the Titans secured the victory.
 
Wery then sealed the game for the Titans with a two-run homer, lifting UWO over Lewis and Clark, 8-5.
 
Oshkosh plays its final contests of THE Spring Games in Clermont on Thursday (March 27). The Titans are scheduled to face Lawrence University (4-10) at 10:15 a.m. eastern time and Colby College (Maine) (5-3) at 12:30 p.m. eastern.
