SAINT PETER, Minn.- UW-Oshkosh women's soccer played Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn) on the Gusties' home field on Saturday (September 6), battling to a 1-1 tie on
Addyson Edwards' (Appleton/Appleton West) deep free kick goal.
The Titans (1-0-2) have now faced Gustavus Adolphus (2-0-2) three times in program history and extended their unbeaten streak over the Gusties to three games. They won the first meeting in Stevens Point in 2012, 1-0, and tied, 2-2, in Oshkosh last season.
UW-Oshkosh held a 15-14 edge in total shots while both teams registered eight shots on goal.
Jaden LeRoy (Evansville/Evansville), who scored in Oshkosh's win over Willamette University (Ore.) on August 31, paced the Titans with three shots on goal on three attempts.
Ariana Gonzalez (Appleton/Appleton North) recorded four shots and
Nadia Epshteyn (Cedarburg/Cedarburg) put one of her three attempted shots on goal.
Belle Dehner (Cottage Grove/Monona Grove),
Maris Heun (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer), and
Gabby Born (Fond du Lac/Fond du Lac) all put their only shots on goal.
Mallory Kerhin (Green Bay/Green Bay Southwest) matched her Gustie opponent-in-goal with seven saves and a goal allowed. All of her saves came in the first half.
After getting tied up with a Gustie just past the middle of the field in the 55th minute and drawing a free kick on the yellow card, Edwards drove the ball all the way to the goal and off the top of the goalkeepers' outstretched gloves to score the first goal of her collegiate career. She became the second Titan newcomer to score in UW-Oshkosh's first three games, following
Alexa Schorr's (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) goal at Lewis & Clark College (Ore.) on August 29.
Kerhin registered four of her saves in the first seven minutes of the game before UW-Oshkosh gained control of the ball and took three shots. Neither of the Titans' shots through the rest of the half were on goal while Gustavus Adolphus kept Kerhin on her toes by putting three more shots on goal and another off the right woodwork.
Maintaining possession through much of the beginning of the second half, the Titans shot twice on goal before Edwards' free kick goal at 54:29. Oshkosh shot four more times with attempts on goal from Epshteyn and Heun before the Gusties scored the equalizer in the 65th minute.
UW-Oshkosh dominated possession of the ball for the remainder of the match. LeRoy added shots on goal in the 79th and 82nd minutes and Born tried to put the Titans up late 14 seconds after Born's attempt while the defense remained stout and allowed just one off target shot with 10 seconds remaining on the clock.
The Titans will play their first match in Wisconsin on Wednesday (September 10) at 4:30 p.m. as they take on the Milwaukee School of Engineering (0-2-1) on Viets Field. UW-Oshkosh is 5-1-1 all-time against the Raiders.
