Pointers Edge Out Titans

Longdin, Gibbs Earn Singles Victories in Close WIAC Loss

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - WIAC Conference play continued for UW-Oshkosh women's tennis Friday (Oct. 9), as the Titans traveled to UW-Stevens Point, and were defeated, 4-3, at the University Courts. 

Oshkosh secured the doubles point off wins in the second and third flights. Kayla Gibbs (Muskego/Muskego) and Sarah Schaeffer (Rock Springs/Reedsburg) picked up the 6-4 win over Ellie Aitken and Lacey Foss in No. 2 doubles, while Peyton Peterson (Sheboygan Falls/Sheboygan Falls) and Jameson Gregory (Delavan/Big Foot) defeated Allie Brosteau and Georgia Haddorff, 6-2. In No. 3 doubles. 

Top doubles flight duo Brianna Owens (Appleton/Kimberly) and Olivia Pethan (Oshkosh/Fox Valley Lutheran) suffered a 6-4 loss to Chloe Regal and Annie Wierzbicki. 

No. 6 singles saw Taylor Longdin (Slinger/Slinger) go to a tiebreaker third set against Haddorff. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Longdin came back and won the second, 6-2, to force the winner-take-all set three. In the third, Longdin outscored Haddorff, 10-8, to claim the set and match for the Titans. 

Gibbs recovered in singles competition, securing a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Aitken in the third flight. 

Pethan battled during both sets in No. 1 singles, but came up short, losing the match 6-4, 7-5 to Regal.  

Owens dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision to Wierzbicki in the second flight as Schaeffer fell, 6-4, 6-2, to Foss in the fourth flight.  

Sophie Gish (West Bend/West Bend West) suffered a loss in No. 5 singles, being handed a 6-1, 6-2 loss by Brosteau. 

The Titans are back on the road Saturday (Oct. 10), as the team travels to the John & Fay Menard YMCA Tennis Center to face UW-Eau Claire at noon. Oshkosh hopes to snap a 19-match losing streak against the Blugolds, with the team's last win taking place during the 2010-11 season.
