EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - UW-Oshkosh women's tennis continued westward Saturday (Oct. 10), as the Titans were defeated, 6-1, by UW-Eau Claire at the John & Fay Menard YMCA Tennis Center.
The duo of Brianna Owens (Appleton/Kimberly) and Olivia Pethan (Oshkosh/Fox Valley Lutheran) picked up the lone doubles win for Oshkosh in the top flight, defeating Magdelena Kristo and Reese Keller by a 6-4 score. Jameson Gregory (Delavan/Big Foot) and Peyton Peterson (Sheboygan Falls/Sheboygan Falls) were bested by Brooke Boland and Stella Platt, 6-3, in No. 2 doubles. Second flight action saw Kayla Gibbs (Muskego/Muskego) and Sarah Schaefer get handed a 6-1 defeat by Delaney Hanson and Beatriz Felchak, in a contest that only lasted 13 minutes.
Two singles matches went down to tiebreakers between the Titans and Blugolds. In the top flight, Pethan won the first set, 7-5, over Kristo. After dropping the second by a close score of 6-4, Pethan won the decisive third set, 1-0, after outscoring Kristo 12-10 to take the match and team point.
After winning the first set, 6-3, in No. 3 singles, Gibbs fell to Keller in the second, 6-3, to force a winner-take-all third. Keller would outscore Gibbs, 10-5, to win the third set, 1-0, and claim the match.
In the second singles flight, Owens was swept, 6-1, 6-2 by Felchak, while Schaefer suffered a 6-1, 6-0 defeat by Aubrey Wittwer in the fourth flight. Sophie Gish (West Bend/West Bend West) dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Hanson in No. 5 singles.
Oshkosh returns to the Kolf Sports Center Outdoor Tennis Courts Wednesday (Oct. 14) to face Marian University in the team's final nonconference match of the fall season. The match was previously scheduled for Oct. 1 but was postponed due to weather conditions. The Titans are undefeated when facing the Sabres, taking all 14 matches played since the 1992-93 season.
