Fritsch, Rivers, Kao Capture National Titles In First Day Of NCAA Indoor Championship

Joshua Rivers won his third consecutive indoor long jump title at 7.48 meters

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The UW-Oshkosh men's track & field team competed in the first of the two-day NCAA Division III Indoor Championship on Friday (March 13) and collected three individual national titles to go with two additional All-America nods.
 
The Titans, ranked second in the nation by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association going into the national meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex, currently sit in first place with 38 points in their quest for the second indoor national championship in program history (2009).
 
After the first four events of the heptathlon, the Titans hold three of the top 10 positions. Charlie Nolan (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community West) sits in seventh with 2,860 points, Marcus Mittlestadt eighth at 2,844, Cavan Dobberstein (Manawa/Fox Valley Lutheran) ninth at 2,826 and Bryce Smith (De Pere/West De Pere) 13th at 2,692. Dobberstein won the long jump with a 6.97-meter mark and Mittlestadt won the shot put with a cast of 13.40 meters.
 
In the first scored event of the championship, Gavin Fritsch (Little Chute/Little Chute Career Pathways Academy) took home his first indoor weight throw title after finishing second in the event in 2025, throwing 20.78 meters which bested the field by over a meter. Bryce Hale (Appleton/Kimberly) also locked up his first indoor All-America honor, placing sixth with a throw of 18.82 meters.
 
Joshua Rivers (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) captured his third indoor long jump title and fifth overall by jumping 7.48 meters. The Division III record holder won the event by two centimeters with his sixth and final jump after Ahmad Fogg from Stockton University (N.J.) moved into the top spot with a 7.46-meter leap. Dylan Doss (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) claimed his first All-America award with the Titans in the event, jumping 7.10 meters for fourth place.
 
Doss returned for the 60-meter dash preliminary round, where he ran 6.67 seconds to clinch his spot in Saturday's (March 14) final round. Davian Willems (De Pere/West De Pere) and Nolan Milas (Virgil, Ill./Burlington Central) also competed for the Titans. Willems finished ninth with a time of 6.73 seconds and Milas took 16th with a time of 6.85 seconds.
 
Tyran Bender (Bradley, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais Community) ran in the preliminary of the 400-meter dash, finishing fifteenth overall with a time of 48.59 seconds.
 
Lucas Nicholson (Pewaukee/Pewaukee) qualified for the final in the 800 meter run, finishing second in his heat with a time of 1:52.90. Nicholson got the automatic qualifier to the final along with a personal record with his second-place finish.
 
Doss then came back for his third event of the day, running a school record of 20.98 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Doss qualified for the event's final round as the top seed for the second time. Nolan Milas (Virgil, Ill./Burlington Central) also competed in the event, narrowly missing the final with a ninth-place finish of 21.40 seconds.
 
The 4x400-meter relay team of Matthew Eiden (Stevens Point/SPASH), Sean Malay (Denmark/Denmark), Eli Kerner (Eagle River/Northland Pines) and Rivers finished tenth with a time of 3:17.76.
 
Colin Kao captured the pole vault national title in his first season with the Titans with a program-record height of 5.33 meters.
 
The Titans return to the track on Saturday at 10 a.m.
