CLERMONT, Fla.- Brianna Bougie (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) earned saves in both games as nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh softball picked up a pair of nonconference victories Monday (March 23) in Clermont, Fla.
Â
Oshkosh (11-3), ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III by the
National Fastpitch Coaches Association, never trailed in either contest and winning by scores of 2-1 over St. Lawrence University (N.Y.) and 7-2 against Augustana College (Ill.).
Â
Bougie extended her program record to 19 saves after closing out both victories Monday. She tossed three scoreless innings during both wins, allowing just one hit while striking out eight without issuing a walk across the two outings.
Â
Amanda Martineck (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) contributed three of the Titans' 12 hits on the day.
Emma Bohn (Rosendale/Laconia),
Brianne Lopez (Volo, Ill./Grant Community) and
Kelly Selzer (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) each added two hits for Oshkosh.
Â
In the one-run victory over St. Lawrence (1-5), Lopez and Bohn opened the bottom of the first inning with a double and run-scoring single, respectively, and
Sarah Hammerton (Appleton/Appleton West) lifted a sacrifice fly following an
Olivia Ullman (Denmark/Denmark) sacrifice bunt.
Â
The Titans led, 2-0, four batters into the home half of the first frame but were held hitless the rest of the way.
Â
The Oshkosh pitching combination of starter
Grace Nardi (Marquette, Mich./Negaunee) and Bougie in relief made the brief scoring burst hold as the duo limited the Saints to an unearned run on three hits – all singles – and a pair of walks.
Â
Nardi did not allow a St. Lawrence baserunner past first base across the first four innings. However, a walk, error and bunt single loaded the bases for the Saints with no outs during the fifth frame, ending Nardi's afternoon.
Â
Clinging to a 2-0 lead, Bougie got an unconventional first out in the top of the fifth inning as a solid line drive to left field resulted in Titans left fielder
Olivia Baugnet (De Pere/De Pere) throwing to shortstop Selzer for a force at third base. With the Saints trailing, 2-1, and runners at first and second bases, Bougie escaped the jam by inducing a pair of groundouts.
Â
Bougie went on to work around a pair of Titan errors during the sixth inning and another error in the seventh to preserve the win.
Â
Nardi (3-0) allowed one run (zero earned) on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts in four-plus innings pitched to record the win.
Â
Saints starting pitcher Marleigh Monroe (0-3) suffered the complete-game loss despite holding Oshkosh to two runs on two hits. She did not register a strikeout or issue a walk.
Â
During the second contest, Oshkosh owned a 3-0 lead after three innings and put the game away with a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh frames.
Â
Maddie Crick (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) and Ullman delivered run-scoring doubles before Martineck's RBI single that plated Ullman with what proved to be the winning run and a 3-0 advantage during the top of the third inning.
Â
Augustana (2-4) pulled within 3-2 following runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, but
Kendra Baumeister (Burlington/Burlington) smacked a pinch-hit, two-run single to right field to bring home Baugnet and Selzer in the top of the sixth inning.
Â
Oshkosh later capped the scoring on back-to-back RBI doubles from Martineck and Selzer during the seventh frame.
Â
Martineck finished the game 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, one run scored and two runs batted in. Selzer, who notched her first collegiate hits, was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a stolen base, while scoring twice and driving in a run.
Â
Kiran Sanford (Two Rivers/Mishicot) (6-1) was credited with the win in the Oshkosh pitcher's circle, yielding just two runs on four hits and one walk with six strikeouts.
Â
Bougie then hurled the final three frames, ceding one hit. She struck out five and walked none.
Â
The Titans pitching staff now sports a 1.27 earned run average after giving up a mere two earned runs Monday.
Â
A'rion Lonergan had two of the Vikings' five hits.
Â
Augustana starting pitcher Mya Brown (1-2) was charged with the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk with one strikeout in five innings pitched.
Â
Oshkosh concludes its trip to Florida on Wednesday (March 25) against Kalamazoo College (Mich.) at 9 a.m. and 21st-ranked DePauw University (Ind.) at 11:15 a.m. (CDT) in Clermont.
