Titans Run Rule Blugolds In Sunday Split

Jack McNamara scored the walkoff run of the Titans' run-rule victory in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader

OSHKOSH, Wis.- UW-Oshkosh baseball won the first game of Sunday's (March 29) doubleheader against UW-Eau Claire at Tiedemann Field by an eight-inning score of 11-1 before the Blugolds took the season series by scoring four runs in the ninth inning of the second game to win, 9-6.

The Titans (5-10) ended a five-game skid with the game one win, however the Blugolds (9-5) moved their all-time record against the Titans to 9-54 with the game two win and 3-1 weekend in Oshkosh.

Oshkosh recorded 18 hits on the day, led by four apiece from Aaron Davis (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) and Braydon Skenandore (De Pere/West De Pere). Davis also paced the Titans with four RBI, reached an additional time with a walk, and was one of two Titans with a home run.

Jack McNamara (La Grange, Ill./Lyons), who scored the walk off run in the first game, added three hits. Logan Schill (Pewaukee/Pewaukee), Trevor Morris (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) and Danny Connelly (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) each recorded two hits and Jack McKellips (Oshkosh/Lourdes Academy) collected one hit.

Oshkosh jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning of the first game with a small ball mentality. Skenandore got a one-out single and moved around the horn on a passed ball and a wild pitch before McNamara laid down an RBI bunt. The Titans had the bases loaded when Davis reached the batter's box on walks for Schill and Danny Connelly (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein). Davis beat out another bunt for a single, scoring Schill and McNamara reached home the following at-bat when Brenden Max (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) grounded out to second base.

The Titans added two runs in the second inning as Schill recorded a sacrifice fly to send Cullen Kirchberg (DeForest/DeForest) home and McKellips scored on an error.

In the following three innings, Oshkosh plated one runner to create a comfortable 8-0 edge by the end of the fifth frame.

Following an unearned run for the Blugolds in the top of the seventh, Skenandore led off the Titans' half of the eighth by reaching on an error and advancing to second on the errant throw. He moved over to third base on a wild pitch during Schill's plate appearance. Schill drew a walk and stole second to put both runners in scoring position. Oshkosh capitalized on the situation by recording back-to-back-to-back RBI that sealed the shortened victory. McNamara singled, Connelly dropped a bunt and Davis singled.

Oshkosh starter Connor Walters (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) (2-0) did not leave the mound until there were two outs in the seventh inning and Eau Claire finally got on the board. He finished his fourth start of the season with four strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work, scattering six hits and allowing five walks.

Colton Kachinsky (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) finished out the contest by fanning all four Blugolds he faced, including a 1-2-3 eighth frame.

Eau Claire starter Tyler Webb (0-1) was assigned the loss. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits, three walks and a hit batter while striking out six across 4.0 innings.

Diego Caicedo recorded two hits in the game.

The Blugolds took Brett Gaynor (Long Grove, Ill./Stevenson), Oshkosh's game two starter, for three runs in the first inning of the second game and retained the lead until the eighth inning, fighting off the Titans' game-tying efforts in the fourth and sixth innings. Oshkosh flipped the lead with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning; however, Eau Claire responded with four runs of its own in the ninth.

Davis got Oshkosh on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a two-out solo home run, decreasing the deficit to 3-1.

After Gaynor got through his third consecutive inning without allowing a runner to pass first base, the Titans tied the game in the bottom of the fourth frame. Schill was hit by a pitch as the first batter of the inning and stole second before advancing to third on McNamara's unassisted groundout to the first baseman. Schill then scored when Danny Connelly (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) went back to what worked in game one and laid down a bunt, reaching second on the throwing error. Davis sent Connelly home with an RBI single for the tying run.

Both teams scored runs in the sixth inning and the Blugolds broke the tie in the seventh on a sacrifice fly.

Ryan Richter (Waukesha/Waukesha West) put the Blugolds down in order in the top of the eighth inning with two strikeouts and McNamara kicked off Oshkosh's two-run half of the frame with a leadoff double. Tyler Schader (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) pinch ran for McNamara and eventually scored on a Brenden Max (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) fielder's choice. A wild pitch sent Connelly across the plate, who reached base on an error. The Titans looked to add more runs to the lead with consecutive walks for Morris and Kirchberg, however Sebastian De La Toba relieved Ben Dorantes and notched back-to-back swinging strikeouts to escape the inning.

Ben Buehring (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) came in to pitch the ninth inning and got the first batter he faced on strikes. He then allowed a single, a walk, and a game-tying sacrifice fly before Eau Claire took the lead back on an error. Ethan Wick (Appleton/Appleton North) got Oshkosh out of the inning by inducing a flyout to center field following the Blugolds' two-run triple that made the score 9-6.

Schill got on base in the bottom of the ninth with a single, but got caught up in the game-ending double play after pinch hitter Tim Witchger (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame College Prep) flew out to right field.

Gaynor went 4.0 no-decision innings in his first outing of the season and fanned two Blugolds against three runs on five hits.

Kachinsky gave up an unearned run across 2.1 relief innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out one. Richter pitched 1.2 frames and fanned two batters but allowed another run on two hits. Buehring (0-1) was assigned the loss as he was responsible for Eau Claire's go-ahead ninth-inning run. He added another strikeout while giving up four runs (one earned) on one hit and two walks.

De La Toba, Eau Claire's fourth and final pitcher of the contest, earned his second win of the season on 1.2 innings pitched, striking out two Titans while holding them scoreless on one hit.

The Titans remain at home for their next series, welcoming UW-Stevens Point (6-8, 0-4 WIAC) to Tiedemann Field on Friday and Saturday (April 3-4). Oshkosh is 148-116-1 against the Pointers since 1956, including an 8-2 mark in the last 10 matchups.
