De Pere, Wis.- The rain didn't put a damper on UW-Oshkosh women's tennis Friday (Sept. 18), as the Titans secured a 5-2 victory over St. Norbert College at the Green Bay Tennis Courts.
Oshkosh won the doubles point off wins in the second and third flights. Kayla Gibbs (Muskego/Muskego) and Taylor Longdin (Slinger/Slinger) picked up the 6-2 win against Molly Merrill and Madeline Diefenthaler in the No. 3 match. The No. 2 doubles match saw Jameson Gregory (Delavan/Big Foot) and Peyton Peterson (Sheboygan Falls/Sheboygan Falls) defeat Anna Vechart and Irene Multhauf by a 6-3 score.
Top doubles flight action saw Brianna Owens (Appleton/Kimberly) and Olivia Pethan (Oshkosh/Fox Valley Lutheran) fall to Jordan Dominick and Allison Unverzagt, 6-3.
Two singles matches went into tiebreakers, with Oshkosh coming away with both wins. Pethan got a 6-3, 7-6, win over Dominick in the top flight after winning the second set tiebreaker 7-5. Sophie Gish (West Bend/West Bend West) took set one in No. 5 singles, 6-4, against Merrill before being shutout 6-0 in set two. Gish managed to win set three 1-0 after outscoring in the tiebreaker, 10-5.
Gibbs, playing in the third flight, secured a 6-1, 6-2 win against Vechart, while Longdin shutout Ana Nankervis, 6-0, 6-0, in the sixth flight.
No. 4 singles turned into a loss for Gregory, as she fell, 6-3, 6-4, to Multhauf, while Owen was defeated in No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-4, by Unverzagt.
The Titans host Marian University for a nonconference match on Oct. 1 at the Kolf Sports Center Outdoor Tennis Courts, with first serve set for 4 p.m. Since their first meeting in 1992, Oshkosh has not dropped a match to the Sabres, and have swept them on eight different occasions, including the previous four meetings between the two programs.
