OSHKOSH, Wis.- UW-Oshkosh women's soccer picked up both its fourth win and fourth shutout on Saturday (Sept. 19) as it defeated University of Dubuque (Iowa), 2-0, at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium in the fourth annual 151 Derby.
The derby trophy will stay in Oshkosh for the first time after the Spartans won the inaugural edition of the event, 3-0, in 2023, and the teams tied in 2024 and 2025.
The victory is also the first over the Spartans for Oshkosh since winning by a 2-1 tally in Dubuque on Sept. 15, 2021.
Battling through a constant downpour, the Titans scored their first goal in the 40th minute on a penalty kick following a Spartan handball and added their second in the 66th minute on a long pass from midfield to
Addyson Knoebel (Appleton/Appleton West).
Oshkosh (4-2) outshot Dubuque (2-3-2), 18-4, with eight going on goal to the Spartans' two. The Titans were awarded all five corner kicks in the match.
Knoebel put all three of her shots on goal while
Addie Wreath (Appleton/Appleton East) went 2-for-3 in shots on goal.
Belle Dehner (Cottage Grove/Monona Grove),
Jaden LeRoy (Evansville/Evansville) and
Laney Wiebel (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) rounded out Oshkosh's shots on goal.
Titan goalkeepers
Larissa Likes (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) and
Jamaya Mariner (Green Bay/Green Bay East) each played a half. Likes earned the win by way of starting and the halftime lead, and Mariner preserved the lead in the second half. Both keepers recorded one save.
The rain started coming down right as the match was getting underway, but that didn't stop the Titans from pushing into Spartan territory and putting two shots on goal before the 16th minute.
After
Nadia Epshteyn's (Cedarburg/Cedarburg) shot in the box was blocked, a Dubuque defender was charged with a handball inside the 18-yard box, giving a penalty kick to the Titans. Wiebel took the kick and nailed it to the back of the net at 39:40 to break the scoreless tie.
Midway through the second half, the ball was swapping possession at midfield before Oshkosh took control and Dehner kicked it to Knoebel, who was waiting downfield with just the goalkeeper to beat. The keeper came out to meet her, and Knoebel put the ball past her outstretched gloves to the bottom right corner of the goal, creating a 2-0 deficit.
Dubuque attempted its only shot on goal of the second half in the 78th minute, a long free kick from 45 yards out that Mariner trapped for her save.
The Titans host Carthage College (2-2-3) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium on Wednesday (Sept. 23) at 7 p.m. and Loras College (Iowa) (6-0), which is receiving votes in the most recent Intercollegiate Women's Soccer Organization for Coaches poll, on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 2 p.m. to wrap up September's seven home matches.
Carthage owns a 4-1-3 edge in the all-time series over Oshkosh and Loras is 7-2 against the Titans.
