ST. CHARLES, Mo.- In the UW-Oshkosh women's wrestling team's first taste of postseason competition at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships (NCWWC) Region VI Championship on Sunday (Feb. 23), the Titans placed fifth and three individuals qualified for the national championship.
McKendree University (Ill.) led the six-team regional with 188 points, followed by host Lindenwood University (Mo.) in second at 143. UW-Stevens Point took third with 113.5 points, Quincy University (Ill.) finished fourth with 105, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 28.5, and Eureka College (Ill.) sixth with 22.
Annesley Day (Fr. • Round Rock, Texas),
Mya Delleree (Fr. • Fredonia), and
Alivia Davey (Fr. • Berlin) each placed high enough in Sunday's regional championship to qualify for the national championship and compete for the first All-America performances in program history.
Day won her quarterfinal and semifinal bouts in the 124-pound bracket, both by decision. She outscored Lindenwood's Hayley Gibson, 10-9, and UW-Stevens Point's Amelia Adams, 17-9. In the first-place match, Shelby Moore from McKendree defeated Day by a 10-0 technical fall.
Delleree, who also competed at 124-pounds, earned a 10-0 technical fall over Margaret Gillmore from UW-Stevens Point in the quarterfinal after earning a first round bye. She then lost in the semifinal and consolation semifinal before again defeating Gillmore, this time by a 12-2 technical fall. She then held Adams scoreless while scoring 10 of her own for another technical fall in the fourth place match.
At 207-pounds, Davey earned a bye in the first round before dropping a decision loss to Desiree Fuentes from Lindenwood in the quarterfinal. She then sat through two rounds of byes before beating McKendree's Manusiu Muti by a 6-0 decision. In the third place match, she got revenge on Fuentes by taking a tight 2-1 decision victory.
Ella Creighton placed sixth in the 180-pound bracket while earning a 3-0 decision victory over Eureka's Alex Parks.
Day, Delleree, and Davey will compete in the NCWWC Championship on March 7-8 at the Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.
