EAU CLAIRE, Wis.- Ryan Bergman (Watertown/Watertown),
Ryan Hanson (McHenry, Ill./McHenry Community) and
Jacob Ward (Green Bay/Bay Port) will all compete in the second day of the NCAA Division III Region VII Championship in Eau Claire after posting 2-1 records in Friday's (Feb. 27) matches.
Hanson defeated Milwaukee School of Engineering's Connor McDonald in the first round of the 133-pound bracket by 11-0 major decision but was pinned by St. John's University's (Minn.) Connor Krueger in the second and went to the consolation bracket. He stayed in the action by earning a 14-1 major decision over Caleb Hillshafer from Lakeland University.
Ward, wrestling at 149 pounds, posted wins of 18-11 against Dominic Smith of St. John's and 16-14 against Concordia Moorhead's Aidan Ruddy in his first and third matches. Riese Thornberry from UW-Stevens Point sent Ward to the consolation bracket with a second round pin.
Bergman is headed to the second day of action in the 165-pound consolation bracket after he defeated Concordia Moorhead's Nicholas Ankeny by 5-1 decision in the first round and pinned Hunter Burr of Concordia University Wisconsin at 2:24 in the third round after dropping a technical fall loss to Tanner Gerber from UW-La Crosse.
Caidan Ronning (Plano, Ill./Plano) picked up a second-round consolation victory at 157 pounds after dropping a technical fall in the opening round. He defeated Lakeland's Dillon Raab by 18-2 technical fall before losing by fall to Deakin Trotzer from UW-Stevens Point.
JP Culver (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg Community),
Logan Harel (Cadott/Cadott),
Kyle Rasper (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg),
Nathan Lenz-Messman (Menasha/Menasha),
Desmond Walker (Oshkosh/Winneconne) and
Roman Martell (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) all went 0-2 at 125, 141, 174, 184, 197 and 285 pounds, respectively.
Bergman, Hanson and Ward return to the mat Saturday (Feb. 28) at 10 a.m. and look to qualify for the Division III Championship hosted in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 13-14.
