Titans Split WIAC Contests With Blugolds, Blue Devils

After losing all nine contests to UW-Eau Claire, the UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team bounced back to win all nine matches against UW-Stout on Saturday (Oct. 4). The Titans played the opener in Eau Claire before traveling to Menomonie for the nightcap.

UW-Oshkosh (4-8, 2-3 WIAC) used three individual victories on a tiebreaker and a pair of easy wins in doubles action to defeat UW-Stout (3-11, 0-4 WIAC).

Successful after going to extended singles play were Llora Waldman in the third flight, Hannah Bostwick in the fourth and Maggie Bolton in the sixth. Waldman recorded a 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 win over Emma Pedersen, while Bostwick registered a 4-6, 7-5, 10-7 victory over Kelsey Pedersen. Bolton marked a 6-4, 6-7, 10-2 decision over Anna Lano.

Other individual winners for the Titans were Erica Van Riper in the first flight, Bailey Sagen in the second and Paige Ganser in the fifth. Van Riper won by a 6-3, 6-2 result over Angela Braun, while Sagen edged Cortney Hallahan by 6-4, 6-4 scores. Ganser had little trouble in a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Danielle Lutz.

In doubles play, Sagen and Van Riper defeated the UW-Stout No.1 doubles tandem of Braun and Hallahan by an 8-2 score.

The Titans also received wins from Kimberlyn Fernez and Brianna Theobald at No. 2 doubles and Bolton and Bostwick at No. 3. Fernez and Theobald defeated Lano and Emma Pedersen, 8-4, while Bolton and Bostwick edged Lutz and Kelsey Pedersen, 8-6.

UW-Eau Claire (6-1, 4-1 WIAC) received its best UW-Oshkosh competition from Bostwick at No. 6 singles and Sagen and Van Riper at No. 1 doubles. Sarah Henderson outlasted Bostwick by a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 result, while Maddie Johnson and Madison Rossebo trimmed Sagen and Van Riper by an 8-6 score.

The Blugolds took the No. 2 doubles match as Paige Kuepers and Nicole Pothen defeated Theobald and Waldman, 8-2. At No. 3 doubles, Henderson and Colleen McCullough shut out Bolton and Bostwick, 8-0.

In singles play, Johnson won in the first flight, McCullough in the second and Pothen in the third for UW-Eau Claire. Johnson defeated Van Riper, 6-1, 6-0, while McCullough ousted Sagen, 6-4, 6-2. Pothen tallied a 6-2, 6-2 win over Theobald.

Other individual winners for the Blugolds were Rossebo in the fourth flight and Kuepers in the fifth. Rossebo recorded a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Waldman and Kuepers a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Ganser.

UW-Oshkosh hosts UW-River Falls next Saturday (Oct. 11) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex.
