Titans Lose Twice At WIAC Team Tournament

UW-Oshkosh went winless on the court as it suffered a pair of losses at the WIAC Women's Tennis Team Tournament held Saturday (April 26) in Whitewater.

The Titans (7-10) lost a 6-0 decision to UW-Whitewater (20-5) in the semifinals before falling by a 9-0 result to UW-Eau Claire (15-4) in the third-place contest. UW-Whitewater went on to earn the WIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship with an 8-1 victory over UW-La Crosse (15-6) in the title match.

UW-Oshkosh and the other three squads qualified for the WIAC Team Tournament with their top-four finish at the seven-team WIAC Championship held last October in Madison.

UW-Whitewater had little trouble in defeating UW-Oshkosh. The Warhawks won 24 of the 28 games in doubles play and 36 of the 39 games in singles action.

The Titans dropped a pair of 8-1 contests in the doubles competition. Morgan Counts and Erica Van Riper lost to Alexandra Bayliss and Jackie Vitale in the first flight while Maggie Bolton and Llora Waldman lost to Megan Humphreys and Amy Upthagrove in the second.

Abby Day and Hillary Franzen defeated UW-Oshkosh's Hannah Bostwick and Valerie Langkau by an 8-2 score at No. 3 doubles.

UW-Whitewater clinched its win over UW-Oshkosh with individual victories by Humphreys in the second flight, Upthagrove in the fourth and Kelsey Fitzgerald.

Humphreys defeated Van Riper, 6-0, 6-0, while Upthagrove ousted Waldman, 6-1, 6-0. Fitzgerald posted a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Andrea Larson.

Individual contests involving UW-Oshkosh's Counts in the first flight, Langkau in the third and Bostwick in the fifth weren't completed.

Against UW-Eau Claire, UW-Oshkosh lost 24 of its 28 games in doubles play. The best UW-Oshkosh result was in the first flight, where Counts and Van Riper dropped an 8-3 decision to Katie Gillman and Maddie Johnson.

The Blugolds won the other two doubles matches as Mary Frassetto and Madison Rossebo defeated Bolton and Waldman, 8-1, in the second flight and Paige Kueppers and Nicole Pothen ousted Bostwick and Larson, 8-0, in the third.

UW-Eau Claire won five of its six singles matches in straight sets. The lone exception was Gillman's 7-6, 3-6 (10-3) victory over Counts in the first flight.

Winning by 6-0, 6-1 scores were Colleen McCullough over Waldman in the fourth flight, Rossebo over Larson in the fifth and Pothen over Bolton in the sixth.

Other UW-Eau Claire individual wins belonged to Johnson in the second flight and Frassetto in the third. Johnson beat Van Riper, 6-1, 6-4, while Frassetto topped Langkau, 6-3, 6-3.
