Blugolds Spoil Titans' Season Opener

The UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team opened its 2017-18 season with a 7-2 loss to UW-Eau Claire on Friday (Sept. 1) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex.

UW-Eau Claire won the WIAC contest by claiming five of six singles and two of three doubles matches. The Blugolds defeated the Titans by a 9-0 result last year.

Samantha Koppa was UW-Oshkosh's lone individual winner. She outscored Emily Cooper of the Blugolds, 6-4, 7-6 (5), to earn the victory in the fourth flight.

In doubles play, Hannah Peters and Bailey Sagen teamed up to give UW-Oshkosh (0-1, 0-1 WIAC) an 8-4 win over Sarah Henderson and Natalie Wijesinghe in the first flight.

UW-Eau Claire (1-0, 1-0 WIAC) swept the top three singles flights as Wijesinghe defeated Sagen, 6-2, 6-2, in the first, Henderson ousted Alyssa Leffler, 6-3, 6-4, in the second and Molly Stewart beat Kelley Hodyl, 6-0, 6-1, in the third.

The Blugolds also received wins of 6-4, 6-4 by Molly Sanvik over Lesley Kutnink at No. 5 singles and 6-3, 6-1 by Kendra Berry over Monica Micoliczyk at No. 6.

UW-Eau Claire won at No. 2 doubles as Cooper and Stewart posted an 8-3 victory over Kutnink and Leffler. Sanvik and Hannah Zevenbergen took the win at No. 3 doubles with their 8-3 decision over Hodyl and Koppa.

UW-Oshkosh will compete at the eight-team UW-Whitewater Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 2).
