NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind.- UW-Oshkosh men's wrestling placed 11th in the 16-team Manchester University (Ind.) Spartan Mat Classic on Saturday (Jan. 17) with 41.5 points, including a fifth-place finish by
Garth Martell (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) at 285 pounds.

Martell opened the meet with a 7-5 decision win over Curtis Winter from Albion College (Mich.) and defeated Steven Flagg from Huntington College (Ala.) in the second round of the championship bracket. Following a 4-2 loss from Thomas Lunt from John Carroll University (Ohio), he posted a 5-0 win over Heidelberg University's (Ohio) Luke Chambers and a 4-1 sudden victory over Flagg in the first overtime to reach the fifth-place match. Martell was granted an automatic win over Michael Yerian from Marian University (Ind.) by medical forfeit to secure the finish.

Camden Harms (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour),
Roman Martell (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) and
Brodie Driessen (West Allis/West Allis Central) also competed in the 285-pound bracket. Harms went 2-2 with a 4:20 pin over Hunter Crabtree from Manchester and a 1-0 win over Jeremiah Finch from Marian. Martell got a 17-0 technical fall win over Crabtree. Driessen went 0-2.

In the 125-pound bracket,
JP Culver (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg Community) won his second match by 20-1 technical fall against George Wilmer from NAIA Cornerstone University (Mich.) and
Nick Ersland (Wisconsin Dells/Wisconsin Dells) earned a win in his second match by pinning Wabash College's (Ind.) Quentin Keen in 4:45.

Ryan Hanson (McHenry, Ill./McHenry Community) represented Oshkosh at 133 pounds. He won both his first two matches with a 17-1 technical fall over Alex Greene-Barrios from Case Western Reserve University (Ohio) and a 14-1 major decision over Joshua Marlin from Manchester.

Logan Harel (Cadott/Cadott) and
Wyatte Nicholson (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) wrestled at 141 pounds. Harel went 3-2, defeating NAIA Indiana Tech's Xavier Garrett by 10-2 major decision, Nicholson by 11-2 major decision and Evan Smith from Manchester by fall in 2:53. Nicholson earned a win in his second match, defeating Koen Huepenbecker from Indiana Tech, 8-3.

Jacob Ward (Green Bay/Bay Port) and
Dominick Girardin (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere North) earned pin wins at 149 pounds in their second matches in 14 seconds and 6:11, respectively.
Joe Beavers (Hustisford/Hustisford) also wrestled in the weight class but lost both of his matches.

Logan Andrews (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) and
Jacob Hibbard (Mishicot/Mishicot) both won their 157-pound preliminary round matches. Andrews defeated Cristian Hernandez from Ohio Wesleyan University by fall in 4:38 and Hibbard pinned Heidelberg's Carter Mock in 5:41. Both lost two matches in the full bracket.

Caidan Ronning (Plano, Ill./Plano) did not compete in the preliminary rounds of the bracket and opened his day with a 4:08 pin over Mark Ellis from Thomas More University (Ky.). He followed a 14-10 loss to Manchester's Brady Schiffli with another pin, taking fellow Spartan Ian Amstutz to the mat in 2:54. His day ended in the third round of the consolation bracket when he narrowly dropped a 12-10 decision to Zach Wilson from Marian.

Ryan Bergman (Watertown/Watertown) reached the quarterfinal round of the 165-pound championship bracket by beating Marian's Jairo Ojeda by 14-1 major decision and Manchester's Zachary White Jr. by 18-1 technical fall, but fell, 18-3, to top-seeded Andrew Supers from Baldwin Wallace University (Ohio).

At 174 pounds,
Nathan Lenz-Messman (Menasha/Menasha) advanced to the quarterfinals with an 11-4 decision against Thomas Segilo from Huntingdon and a 5:43 pin against Hunter Marlow from Marian.
Kyle Rasper (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) lost both matches in the bracket.

Garrett Fuller (Vincennes, Ind./North Knox Junior-Senior) went 0-2 against 184-pound opponents.

Desmond Walker (Oshkosh/Winneconne) bounced back from a 14-6 loss in the first round of the 197-pound competition by defeating Kameron Collins from Huntingdon, 15-5, following a bye, but was pinned in his next match.
