A member of a Milwaukee Bay View High School gymnastics team that won the public school's state title in 1968, Chris Grainger came to UW-Oshkosh following high school and immediately became a key part of the gymnastics program at the University.

As a freshman Grainger qualified for the NAIA Championship and as a sophomore he placed at the event. His efforts began to pay off during his junior season when he placed fifth on the vault and floor exercise at the NAIA Championship.

Grainger’s senior year marked the beginning of the UW-Oshkosh dynasty in men's gymnastics as the Titans won the NAIA title by defeating perennial champion UW-La Crosse for top honors. That same season Grainger was named the team's most valuable performer, capping a campaign that featured him winning the vault and placing second in floor exercise at the NAIA Championship.

Grainger is the first gymnast to be inducted into the UW-Oshkosh Athletics Hall of Fame.
