Hall of Fame
Matt Thull is one of the most decorated distance runners in UW-Oshkosh history, earning nine All-America awards and 10 conference titles as a member of the school’s men’s track & field and cross country programs from 1993-97.
On the track, Thull was a six-time All-American in the indoor and outdoor 5,000-meter run and a two-time All-American in the outdoor 10,000-meter run. The Campbellsport High School graduate also earned an All-America award in cross country.
Thull dominated the WIAC in the indoor 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs, winning both races for three consecutive years from 1995-97. He also won back-to-back WIAC outdoor titles in both the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs in 1996 and 1997. Thull’s 10 WIAC individual titles are tied with Tom Rath for the most in UW-Oshkosh history.
Thull began collecting his All-America mentions with a sixth-place finish in the 3,000-meter run at the 1995 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championship. His performance followed victories in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs at the WIAC Indoor Championship. Thull completed the season with a sixth-place All-America finish in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Championship.
In 1996, Thull repeated as WIAC indoor champion in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs while adding a sixth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Indoor Championship. Outdoors, Thull won titles in both the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs while earning sixth-place All-America finishes in both events at the NCAA Championship.
Thull closed his UW-Oshkosh track & field career in 1997 with a trio of All-America performances, finishing fourth nationally in the indoor 5,000-meter run and second in both the outdoor 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs. His final season on the track also featured WIAC indoor titles in the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs and league outdoor titles in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs. Thull was named the Outstanding Co-Track Performer of the Meet at the 1997 WIAC Outdoor Championship.
Thull currently ranks third in UW-Oshkosh history with his 1997 time of 14.24.90 in the indoor 5,000-meter run. He also is mentioned fourth on the program’s all-time list with his 1997 time of 8:23.26 in the indoor 3,000-meter run.
In cross country, Thull was a member of UW-Oshkosh teams that finished 13th in 1993, 12th in 1995 and fourth in 1996 at the NCAA Championship and placed first at both the 1995 WIAC Championship and 1996 NCAA Midwest Regional.
Thull’s individual performances on the cross country terrain were highlighted by a finish of second at the 1996 WIAC Championship, ninth at the 1995 WIAC Championship, third at the 1996 NCAA Midwest Regional and 25th for an All-America award at the 1996 NCAA Championship.
Thull, who was among 14 Titans selected to the 54-member WIAC Men’s Track & Field All-Centennial Team in 2012, was inducted into the Campbellsport Hall of Fame in 2013.
Thull lives in Milwaukee where, in 2005, he opened ThunderDome Running LLC, a personal running and training business. Thull and his wife, Erin, are parents of Franklin and August.
